"Ik kan je niet laten gaan, al zeg ik dat het beter is
Alleen en zonder jou
Ik kan het gewoon niet aan, Ik mis je armen om me heen
Nee ik leef niet in een wereld zonder jou"
- Wereld Zonder Jou, by Marco Borsato
Benjamino Stefano Costas Rijnhart - known to his friends and family as Stefan - was born and raised in Vlissingen (The Netherlands) in 1973. His musical career started at age 9 when signed up with a brass band hoping to learn the trumpet. At the band director's urging, he learned to play drums instead - no one has yet to find out if it was because he was good at the drums or bad at the trumpet! In any event, he bade farewell to the horn section and has been playing drums since.
From his earliest days playing classical music with Ons Genoegen on a simple snare, Stefan expanded his percussion skills to include several other instrument, including the timpani. At age 13, he was a approached by an instructor from the Deltaband, (a marching band and a different branch of Ons Genoegen). The style was very different, but he met the challenge, playing in both bands throughout his high school years, eventually participating in Het Wereld Muziekconcours in Kerkrade. For brass bands, the Muziekconcours was the ultimate competition. The bands were graded on not only their sound, but their uniformity, marching techniques, and more, and the Deltaband took home the first place trophy.
After graduating high school, Stefan was drafted into the Netherlands Army where he served as a military policeman, putting a temporary end to his musical career. In 1997, he met and married Diana Underhill and moved to the United States, but still he did not pick up a set of sticks. In late 2002, however, when Brian Underhill and Tom Cramer began whispered discussions of reuniting the Brian Underhill Band, Stefan's interest was piqued. When he was officially invited to join the group, he picked up a trap set, several pairs of sticks, and went to work building up his arms once again.
Stefan's musical influences are diverse: for technique he still listens to the Tamboers en Pijpers van het Korps Mariniers military band, as he was not only influence by their style, but was trained by one of their members. In addition, he often listens to the drum stylings of Max Weinberg, Lars Ullrich, Cesar Zuiderwijk, and Jeff Porcara.
